A student with visual impairment is one whose vision loss interferes with their ability to access a regular school program, regardless of acuity, and requires a current exam by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. 

 

    Through Northeast Georgia RESA Shared Services program, students with a Special Education eligibility in Visual Impairment (VI) will receive direct services from a certified teacher of VI teacher based on what the IEP team determines is their least restrictive environment (LRE). Teachers of the Visually Impaired at Northeast Georgia RESA are specialized educators working to provide full educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Intervention from a TVI is based on students’ individual access needs.  Specialized instruction ranges from teaching braille, helping to adapt classroom materials to make them accessible, and providing guidance for independent living. Working with other specialists across local school districts, these teachers ensure students with visual impairments have the skills to succeed in school and beyond.

    Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services are a related service available to students with an eligibility in the area of visual impairment. O&M services are provided to ensure students travel safely and independently in their environment. Certified O&M specialists conduct assessments and develop personalized training that teach essential skills such as using a white cane, understanding spatial concepts, and navigating both familiar and unfamiliar environments. The O&M specialist collaborates with teachers and parents to ensure students develop the skills needed to navigate their surroundings with confidence and independence.
