Asbestos in Schools Training

Northeast Georgia RESA offers Asbestos Awareness Training annually for our systems in which to meet the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requirements.

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires that custodian personnel that are employed by school systems with facilities that contain asbestos building materials receive a minimum of two hours of asbestos awareness training and maintenance personnel are required to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of asbestos training.  Also under these regulations, school districts are required to perform an original inspection to determine whether asbestos-containing materials are present and then re-inspect asbestos-containing material in each school every three years* and reviews/updates asbestos management plans.  A certified asbestos specialist is also available through Northeast Georgia RESA to provide consultation to assist with asbestos issues and insure system EPD/AHERA compliance.

In addition to AHERA, asbestos management is also regulated by other agencies such as the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, O.S.H.A. and the U.S. E.P.A.
