ELA Specialists Jen Harper and Sallie Robinson had the privilege of leading a session during the Clarke County School District district professional learning day, centered on strengthening reading and writing instruction in K–2 classrooms.
Together, educators explored the Simple View models of reading and writing and unpacked what they mean for instruction. Conversations highlighted the importance of explicitly teaching word recognition alongside language comprehension, as well as developing both transcription skills (handwriting, spelling, sentence construction) and composition (idea generation, organization, and expression).
When all strands are intentionally woven together, young learners are better equipped to grow as capable, confident readers and writers from the very start. ![]()
